Those countries with the highest number of vehicles running their roads like the United States, England and most of the European nations want more and more fuel. Because bio-fuel is made from corn, sugarcane, palm oil, vegetable oil, etc, most often from crops grown in Third World Countries, competition has grown between food and bio-fuels.

In Mexico, there is now a “tortilla crisis”. Corn, which is the basic ingredient of tortilla, is now being sold at five times the price it once sold for. The reason for the increased prices? The demand of corn for making bio-fuel.  Why sell corn for a dollar when you can now get five dollars because the demand is much higher.

Who Suffers?

Highly developed countries will have to import produce from the third world countries to fuel their increasing demand for bio-energy.  Third world countries are usually tropical ones located near the equator.  Longer growing season produce higher yields of corn and  other crops needed to manufacture bio-fuel. However, for these countries corn is also used for food. So is sugar cane. For the first world too produce enough bio-fuel,  people in poorer countries must work longer and harder to be able to afford the higher prices or go without the most basic of all necessities: food.

A Compromise

So what should we do? We must solve the problems of the environment and pollution caused by using fossil fuels, but in doing so we are creating another equally important problem.  If the farm laborers can’t afford food, who will till the land to supply the crops for bio-fuel?

Sustainable energy is supposed to improve life, not make it harder. The solution may be that develped countries will need to find a way to help underdeveloped counties plant new crops. These crops must not be those intended for use by local consumers. Stringent rules governing pricing and distribution will be necessary to keep those crops used for food sources separate from those planted for energy.

Sustainable power means the world working hand in hand to create a better way of life for all. A successful solution to the competing demands for food and bio-fuel crops will require hard work, dedication and compromise.

The world has officially gone mad. While on one hand we’re facing a dire recession, on the other the cost of basic amenities like gas and electricity is skyrocketing.Those from lower income backgrounds, particularly old people, are the ones who are especially at risk in terms of health. During the big temperature freezes of the past winter, it was they who needed to keep warm the most. Yet they are increasingly unable to pay their rising gas bills to stay warm.

“Green Energy” is something repeated daily by the government and huge energy companies alike. It is hyped up as the answer to all our troubles. Save the planet and save money, it’s a no brainer. Secure in this righteous ideal they invest in wind farms and win votes, all in the name of benefitting society as a whole.

But the recent announcement by the UK government exposes that to be the swindle that it is. The “Renewable Heating Incentive” is a plan to build more wind turbines and solar panels to replace fossil fuel energy sources. Yet it’s not the energy corporations who are going to foot the bill for this. They are going to charge us, the taxpayer, to foot the bill! The aim of the proposal is to have a tax, or ‘levy’ on those energy companies who use fossil fuels. However the energy corporations intend to force their customers to pay this levy, by increasing our heating bills.

Electricty prices increased by 26% over the last year, and gas prices by 59%. This meant that millions had to think twice about switching on their portable heaters. Going green has been touted as a way for people struggling to pay their bills to lower their costs. However if this idea is brought in it will harm precisely those who are struggling. Basically, if you have money, you will be able to afford the necessary home improvements to make your house ecologically powered. But if you can’t, and resort to using fan heaters or oil filled radiators to warm your house when the temperatures drop, you’ll be hit with higher energy bills. This will be the case even with the proposed low interest loans being offered to carry out the work. It’s unlikely that a family that is already struggling to pay their gas and electic, not to mention interest on existing debts, will be willing to take on more debt, whetever the interest rate may be. One thing we learned from the introduction of student loans, at the time touted as a measure to make university more accessible to lower income families, is that only the middle classes are prepared to put themselves in such debt on top of everything else.

I ask you, is that right? Surely it would be much better to force energy corporations to give up a small percentage of their enormous profits to pay for this scheme.They could then use this significant sum to subsidise green refubishment on lower income houses, so that they can benefit from reduced heating bills. All in all it is a great way to get the message to kids in a feasible and clever way. If we educate our kids at a young age about how to renew energy sources then we surely have a bright future to look forward to.That will be the one of the only ways that we can be sure of a greener future for everyone. I don’t think that we should stop here, I think we should make this compulsory for every company like Element and O’Neill to tell kids of the younger generation about renewing energy. It is one thing getting to the older generation but it is another to train our children on how to act on this from a younger age which is what it is all about.
