Sustainable Tourism Planning To Take Responsibility Over The Environment

Posted: September 8, 2010 – 10:35 pm

Global tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. As more and more people have access to global travel, the tourism industry is expected to grow even bigger in the years to come. However, although the growth in the tourism industry is pinging in a lot of money and is providing jobs to people in different parts of the world, many environmentalists are alarmed at the rate of destruction that the industry have on the environment. Studies show that more than half of the famous tourist destinations around the world do not meet the sustainable tourism criteria. Most of the famous tourism destinations receive thousands of visitors almost everyday which contributes to the pollution and degradation of the environment.

To make matters worse, many eco-tour operators who are supposed to be advocates of sustainable tourism are not even practicing the principles sustainable tourism. Not that these eco-tour operators do not understand the need for sustainable tourism but sometimes they simply cannot control the human traffic that come their way. During peak seasons, many eco-tourism destinations are filled beyond their carrying capacity that destruction to the environment is inevitable. More often than not, the environmental losses are so great that it would take years for the place to recover.

Working Towards A More Sustainable Future
Although there are many eco-tour operators that are not so keen on practicing sustainable tourism, there are also a lot of operators that are rising to the challenge of protecting the environment and the local culture of their place. Most of these eco-tour operators work closely with the local residents in the area to promote sustainable tourism through education and information campaigns. These eco-tourism operators understand that the community plays a vital role in sustainable tourism and involving them in protection and preservation of the environment is necessary. The local residents, on the other hand, are made to understand the importance of keeping the environment healthy to attract more business to their locality. With the understanding that sustainable tourism will mean more jobs and more income to the locals, people are bound to be more enthusiastic is working closely with the eco-tourism operators.

Aside from involving the local communities, many eco-tourism operators also enlist the help of the visitors to preserve and protect the environment. Visitors are given orientation on the principles of sustainable tourism and environment protection as soon as they arrive. By educating the visitors on the need to protect the environment, the eco-tourism operators can reduce the negative impact that these visitors may have in their area. Recent years have also seen many famous stars advocating the importance of eco-tourism, Miley Cyrus, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to name just a few.

How To Reduce Your Business Environmental Impact

Posted: September 6, 2010 – 11:57 pm

Owning a business takes a lot of energy. Both personal energy plus fuel based electricity. Think about the electricity it requires to operate your office equipment. All of the energy this took to get that case of paper into your office and all of the energy it requires to keep your business running efficiently day after day. The good news is the fact that it is easy to minimize the impact your small business has on the environment. Plus taking these simple steps will also help you save money.

Here Is How To Reduce Your Small Business Environmental Effect:

1.  Put all electronics on a power strip. Keep your electronics, such as your printer and recharging stations, switched off while not being used and at the end of the work day, switch off the power strip they’re plugged into. It is an effective action that will save a lot of electricity during a year.

2. Recycle. In the event you are similar to many business owners, even if you perform most of your work electronically, you’re going through a great deal of paper. Recycle all that paper. Recycle the periodicals that you receive. Recycle the ink cartridges you use in your printer. And recycle your electronics when you’re finished with them. Computers, cell phones as well as your office furnishings can certainly be recycled. It’s a better idea than simply throwing them away.

3. Reduce. Look around your office and at your procedures. Where can you reduce your usage? For instance, if you always arise in the morning and turn on your computer however don’t truly get to work for an hour, then you can decrease your consumption simply by waiting to switch your computer on. Also, when you print copies of receipts for items bought online, save them using a back up hard drive instead and save paper. Make use of the back side of paper that has been printed on as scrap paper or use it in your printer.

4. Buy repurposed products. You can purchase restored electronics. You can save dollars and you will help stop usable products from winding up in a landfill. You can buy restored furniture too. As well as create a great home office from items bought at a flea market.

5. Buy Energy Star. Computers, printers, and even lighting for your office at home can be cost effective from the beginning. CFL light bulbs, compact fluorescent, conserve tons of money for you personally and are genuinely an environmentally smart practice. Reported by Energy Star, if each American home exchanged just one light with the Energy Star light, we’d save enough electricity to light well over 3 million homes in a year, about $700 million in annual energy bills, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year, equal to the emissions of about 800,000 autos.

That is some pretty significant savings for just one tiny light bulb. How many do you have in your office?  Change every incandescent using a CFL and you’re making a huge impact. Choose energy star labeled products and give yourself and the environment a head start.

Reducing your small business impact on the environment doesn’t require a big effort or even a huge structured strategy. It will take a handful of easy actions. Take one item from this list now, implement it and help to make a difference.

The Adverse Mining Influences On Environment

Posted: September 2, 2010 – 5:03 pm

Getting materials from ground sources to put to use in different industries is called mining and it is very rampant in society today. There are varieties of good examples of these materials including iron ore, gold, diamond, stone, asbestos, lead, coal and very many others. The materials are very important in building economies and many depend on them for their livelihoods. On the other side, very many problems emanate from this process of mining. There are so many adverse effects that the environment suffers due to mining and the following are a highlight of some. For this reason, the following is a look at the top effects of mining on the environment.

Wetlands and forests will be among the treasures that can be destroyed through mining. This is usually unavoidable when mining has to take place in such areas. Precious material to be mined usually takes priority and many forests across the globe have been cleared in a bid to extend mining programs. Global warming is an example of the adverse effects that come with destruction of wetlands and forests and this is evident in the world. The aftermath is nothing short of devastation and many can witness this no matter where they are in the world. However, some countries have taken to forestations in a bid to restore sanity in this regard.

There are some kinds of mining processes that will see the release of harmful substances to the environment. Lead is a metal that will be very poisonous and it is a good example in this regard.  Apart from causing children to retard, lead has been reported to cause all sorts of illnesses by people and in many places, exposure to the deadly metal is a health hazard for sure. Through use of safer mining methods as well as general stoppage of it, the problem can be solvable but this is difficult.

Asbestos mining will also cause a lot of harm to the environment and to the people involved. This is because asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma which is a kind of cancer. When asbestos particles are released to the environment, people will inhale them and after several years, cancer might start to form and this is definitely a health risk. To the environment, mining will pose many dangers that will also play a part in destroying not just animals but people as well in the process. Awareness to this danger in invaluable and will be necessary. This way, people will get to know all their rights as they seek to protect themselves. The tips above were given by one of the Auckland lawyers who is hooked on home renovation and home security. He insists that people should pay more attention to the environment they live in or they will lose their home years later.

Considering Carbon Offsetting.

Posted: August 25, 2010 – 11:08 am

With the start of the new new era, the depleting Ozone Layer has been a cause of concern to humanity. Society has started using eco friendly products with a view to reduce harmful emissions. A majority of companies have switched to Carbon Offsetting.  By this process, the amount of gases are controlled significantly by researching the amount of greenhouse gases emitted.

Of the many Carbon Offsetting techniques available, growing of trees is most prevalent.  However, it could be a while until its benefits to the environment are known. It’s also hard to know the amount of CO2 saved. For this simple reason, Carbon Offsetting was authorized by the United Nations and widely approved by consumers.

We can show our support for Carbon Offsetting in numerous ways by purchase of stickers, growing trees, wearing badges, etc. They all contribute in some way or the other.  Internationally, the slew of offset providers is on the rise and a more than half of them are non-profit organisations.

Carbon Offsetting companies have established Wind Farm Projects with a view to control dangerous emissions.  Since Carbon Offsetting involves the benefit of mankind, many are non-profit that are generally open to contribtutions.

Nearly everyone understands the destructive effects of greenhouses gases and the way it affects our climate. This has increased interest in Carbon Offsetting as means to reduce the effect. The most impressive way to counteract toxic emissions is by offsetting. People have developed a more optimistic attitude. The Government themselves closely monitor the various techniques of Carbon Offsetting. Their objective is to use Carbon Offsetting as a measure to ease overall emissions.

iTreecycle supplies Carbon Offsetting options and plants one tree for every product it sells. The trees are planted in the name of the buyer and guaranteed by the United Nations Environment Programme: Plant for the Planet Billion Tree Campaign. We plant 1 tree for each product sold, with the exception of recycling where we plant 1 tree for each full box of empty cartridges sent to us. And for office supplies where we plant 1 tree for each 40 GBP spent.

Save Energy With Humidifiers

Posted: August 3, 2010 – 5:38 pm

Everyone these days are doing things to save energy and save the planet. Everyone is recycling the products or the rubbish which they don’t require. We are all looking for energy saving electrical equipments to save energy and the cost in our own homes. Especially during the cold weather why turn up the thermostat when you have humidifiers in place. In countries like Germany people have already started installing luftbefeuchter (known in Germany for Humidifiers) to save energy, yes now you are wondering how? Just keep reading.

Turning up the humidifier will also turn up the additional moisture which will automatically increase the heat you require inside the house in winter. Even when the temperature is only 19 or 20 degrees we still find the weather very hot in UK because it gets very humid. When we visit India, Italy, Spain or Chile we can easily sit under the sun of 30 to 35 degrees because it is less humid there. My point is low humidity makes the air feel colder that it actually is. The air in the house gets warmer as the humidity increases.

Than electric or gas heater humidifiers uses less energy which means you can save quite a bit of money through humifidiers. Make sure to insulate the loft if you have one. Houses built 20 to 30 years ago have lofts, roofs or ceilings which lets the heat out into the atmosphere. Another way of saving energy and money is of course by insulating the loft. Check if they are any gaps that lets air heat out in walls, floors and ceillings and then seal them. This way the heat stays within your property and also you won’t have to turn the heater on meaning you are saving energy. By doing the above you will also be saving money.

In Chile and Spain humidifiers are known as humidificadores and in Italy humidifier are known as umidificatori.
