An Explanation of the Clean Development Mechanism

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 2:09 pm

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is an understanding in the Kyoto Protocol enabling industrialized nations with a greenhouse gas reduction commitment (the so-called Annex I countries) to help invest in initiatives within developing countries that cut down emissions as an alternative to  more expensive emission reductions within their own countries.

A major feature regarding any authorized CDM project is actually that it provides those planned reductions that would not come to pass devoid of the supplementary inducement offered by emission reductions credits which are sold, a new idea which is called “additionality”.

All these “certified emission reduction” (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2, usually are counted by industrialized nations for meeting their own Kyoto targets.

The CDM facilitates emission-reduction (or emission removal) projects throughout the developing nations around the world in order to get paid certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each one corresponding to a single tonne of Carbon dioxide.

Such CERs are usually traded and sold, and also utilised by industrialized countries in order to satisfy an element of their emission reduction targets according to the Kyoto Process.

The CDM facilitates net worldwide green house gas emissions to be decreased at a lower global cost by financing emission reduction initiatives inside developing countries, when costs really are less than within developed nations. In addition, often the instrument stimulates sustainable development plus emission reductions, at the same time lending industrialized countries a modicum of overall flexibility in precisely how they begin to meet their particular emission reduction or limitation targets.

Theoretically, the CDM provides for a drastic decrease of carbon reduction charges within the underdeveloped nations, whilst achieving exactly the same volume of emission cutbacks as without the CDM. When it comes to practice, however, the emission reductions may very well be reduced utilizing CDM than without the idea and could lead to unsustainable practices.

Hence, to paraphrase, the CDM has produced the carbon credit marketplace in which vendors, situated exclusively in developing nations, can easily create and certify emissions reductions which can be sold to traders in the industrialized nations.

Global warming is one of the most difficult and important of the challenges facing our global community. To date, the foremost of the substantial energy being applied that would tackle concern is the Kyoto Protocol. Climate change reduction minimization policies call for increasing us going for biomass fuels because green alternatives to fossil electricity resources.

Sussex Web Design Company Partners Up With Sussex Wildlife Trust - Sounds Like We Are In For More Tweets!

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 2:09 pm

Fresh Egg well known for their fabulous Web Design and Search Engine Optimisation initiatives have just become a sliver corporate partner of the Sussex Wildlife Trust. The decision to participate in the work of the Trust was a result of our MD Adam Stafford’s passion about the natural world and the wildlife of the county that’s evidenced by his dedication to tracking and shooting deer  - but only and exclusively with a camera as his Deer Diary website shows!

The Sussex Wildlife Trust was actually formed back in 1961 and is now the biggest conservation organisation which is dedicated to preserving the natural heritage of Sussex.  The county has an enormous diversity and range of habitats from dramatic coastline, grazing marshes, the chalk hills of the South Downs to internationally rare heathland.  The aim of the Sussex Wildlife Trust is to conserve the Sussex landscape, wildlife, and its habitats, and to use its knowledge and expertise to help the people of Sussex to understand, enjoy and preserve them.  There are some 25 reserves throughout Sussex and membership of the Trust gives Fresh Egg and its staff access to all of them.

Adam felt motivated to get involved with the work of the Trust for a number of reasons. Not so long ago Adam was fortunate enough to meet up with the Burrell family at their 3,500 acre Knepp Castle.  Once a traditional dairy and arable farm, it is being ”rewilded’’ under the direction of Charles Burrell, who has had stewardship of the estate since he was 21.Nowadays you will find that internal gates and fences have all been torn down and the old dairy cows have been replaced with a herd of Old English Longhorn cattle, Exmoor ponies have recently been introduced as well as Fallow deer and Tamworth pigs which have all been set loose to roam around as they like. That was a pretty brave and inspiring choice and the Estate’s fields are now full of insects and a variety of birds including whitethroats, skylarks, blackcaps, stonechats, nightingales, woodlark and buzzards as well as a few very rare species of butterfly, beetles, bats and bees.

Seeing that passion in action, Adam decided that we should get involved as a company too. That certainly rings true with the Fresh Egg moto of “giving something back” to the whole community.  And what better thing could there be to give back than the wildlife and natural beauty of Sussex?  We’re pleased to be members and involved in such a worthy cause, and the staff have no doubt that sometime in the near future we’ll be talked into clearing culverts, planting trees or counting skylarks!

Dollars, Cents, and Gigawatts: Online Tools Bind Great Power and Great Responsibility

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 2:09 pm

42’s Data Center Calculators illustrate the dramatic cost and carbon savings through efficiency efforts.

IBM has built an extensive marketing campaign around “on-demand.” Though the slogan has been more directed at their business patrons, the concept has become extremely relevant to our personal lives. We can have an entire musical catalog in minutes. Tracing our family histories doesn’t require exhaustive research, only points and clicks. Forget the mall on Black Friday; Amazon, Apple, and Abercrombie.com are always open. A generation of young scholars need never experience card catalogs, microfiche, or the Dewey Decimal System.

These web services-music downloads, shopping, research-were once a novelty. Now they are globally pervasive and presumed to be as automatic as death and taxes.

But there are consequences to this on-demand lifestyle. Few think about the bevy of servers to process this data or the vast storage systems to house it. Fewer think about the energy needed to run this equipment perpetually-24×7x365. Even fewer appreciate the costs for all parties involved, including our ecosystem. Research suggests a single server operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, emits as much CO2 as a Toyota Camry driving 15,000 miles per year. There are thousands of servers in thousands of server rooms, labs, and data centers across the country.

The Gigawatt Age In 2006, peak demand from US data centers was estimated at seven (7) gigawatts. One (1) gigawatt represents one million kilowatts (kW) or one billion watts (W).

This is but one of the remarkable statistics concerning servers, data centers, and energy:

* The average Data Center consumes as much energy as 25,000 households (Parrino, 2009) * Data Centers are expected to surpass the Airline Industry in greenhouse emissions by 2020 (Parrino, 2009) * In Northern California, the home of Silicon Valley, data center energy consumption amounts to 400 megawatts to 500 megawatts (Scofield & Weaver, 2008). The consumption is so concentrated that Pacific Gas and Electric, a utility local to Silicon Valley, has presented six-figure rebates for companies that design for efficiency day one. * The majority of data centers are overcooled and run far less efficiently than they could be.

The Environmental Protection Agency, in a 2007 report to Congress, relayed the most staggering numbers. Data center energy use in 2006 hit 61 billion kilowatt hours at a cost of $4.5 billion. By 2011, these numbers could hit 100 billion kilowatt hours and $7.5 billion if the industry takes a laissez-faire approach to efficiency. Though these servers are mostly out of sight, they are certainly not out of mind for industry authorities. Attend any data center conference or tradeshow and you are guaranteed to find “efficiency” and “green data center” topics in the program.

The attention is warranted. The continued growth of computing in our professional and personal lives begs the question: If consumption is extreme now, what may lay ahead in the future?

The Business Case Despite this sobering news, a simple fact remains: businesses are businesses. While environmental responsibility and stewardship are great for press releases and corporate web sites, most businesses require a cogent business case to undertake efficiency improvements, especially in light of a poor economy. Coupled with the traditional disconnect between IT/Facilities and a lot of new terms and metrics, many data center professionals may not know how and where to begin efficiency efforts.

To help data center professionals tackle the important but complex topic of efficiency, 42U has developed two, free interactive calculators, available on 42U.com. These online tools hope to align all stakeholders in an ongoing data center efficiency program, where significant savings and operational improvements are possible.

PUE/DCiE Calculator Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is a new term in the data center lexicon, comparing a data center’s total energy requirement to the energy consumed by the IT load. A smaller result is better, as it means more energy is devoted to the IT process (the denominator) while less energy is lost in conversion and support loads (minimizing the numerator).

For example: Total Facility Load: 200kW/ Total IT Load: 120kW = 1.66 PUE Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE) is simply the inverse of PUE, allowing efficiency to be expressed as a percentage: Total IT load: 120kW/ Total Facility Load: 200kW x 100 = 60% DCiE.

With 42U’s PUE Calculator, a data center operator does not need to know the origin or intricacies of PUE. If he can access his IT load (from the UPS), and his facility load (from the meter), he receives an initial PUE score.

The calculations then go a step further. Using the PUE score, the built-in energy function estimates total annual energy use, annual energy expense, and annual carbon footprint. For data center professionals who don’t have energy bills or reports readily available, the calculator provides a brief snapshot into the energy profile of their facilities.

Energy Savings Calculator For more detailed calculations, 42U’s Energy Savings Calculator makes use of the same formulas to project energy and CO2 savings over one, five, and ten years.

Users start with their current PUE and then set a goal PUE- a lower value that’s the result of improvements relevant to their facility. The difference between current PUE and goal PUE accounts for the potential energy and cost savings.

Simple math shows that modest improvements can have considerable effect. A 1 megawatt facility (total load) at $.08 per kWh can save over $70K in energy costs and 528 Tons of CO2 emissions in going from a 2.0 PUE to a 1.8 PUE.

If data center professionals are contemplating efficiency improvements, they can compare the cost of proposed solutions with their energy savings to determine their payback period.

Equally if not more important are the potential capital expenditure savings (CAPEX). A more efficient data center reduces the need for additional equipment assets and potentially eliminates the need for construction projects. The CAPEX savings, in avoiding construction, have proven to be 5-6 times the OPEX savings achieved in making a data center more efficient, not to mention the underlying CO2 or GHG savings.

Conclusion PUE is a key ingredient in these online tools. Though not everyone has calculated it, the metric has perhaps gained the most traction of any in the industry. One of the reasons it succeeds is simplicity.

With data centers, one-size-fits-all is uncommon. But every data center requires power to carry out its function. Every data center, by definition, has a portion of that power dedicated to IT equipment. PUE simply compares these values.

While PUE appears to be universal as a formula, the results are a different story. What one data center can achieve may not be relevant to another. For instance, PUE is a dynamic value that varies over time and with workloads. A facility in its infancy, with nominal loads, would be hard pressed to obtain an optimal PUE. Then there’s Google, who continues to rewrite the book on data center design and operation. They recently unveiled a data center in Belgium that operates without chillers. On those days when it’s too hot outside, Google can shift that data center’s workload to another-a distinct advantage of a comprehensive, mirrored data center network. Not every enterprise has that luxury.

So, while the cloud giants of the world publish and promote PUE numbers that hover between 1.15 and 1.25, we encourage data center professionals to take a critical look at what they can do to optimize their unique space. No one shares the exact same layout, equipment, applications, floor space, and set of challenges. Figure out what efficiency program aligns with your facility, your budget, and your goals. These online tools provide an excellent starting point for those conversations.

The Downside of RO Water Filters

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 2:09 pm

Reverse osmosis (or RO) filtration works by reversing water through a filtering system that eliminates sediment and then utilizes a semi-permeable membrane to complete the filtering process. Generally after that, a carbon filter is used to get rid of other contaminants. The water is then distributed through a faucet as purified tap water. It can be installed by a plumber and can be used to purify water anywhere in the home. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of RO water filters.

RO water filters are very efficient at eliminating toxic materials like lead, rust, salt, parasites, salt, sulfates and sediments, but unfortunately, there are some negatives that go along with a RO system. RO systems only partial remove viruses and bacteria, and require other types of water purification systems to back it up. The RO filtration system actually removes too many minerals that the body needs for good functioning, longevity and health; minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium for example. If those are eliminated, then it forces the body to draw from stores in the teeth and bones.

Sometimes home reverse osmosis water filtration systems are accompanied by an added carbon filtration device. Carbon effectively removes most of the chemicals that reverse osmosis cannot. But again, still other filters are necessary to remove all of the unwanted particles. For example, chlorine byproducts can only be removed through adsorption since the chemicals are gaseous. They actually just pass right through a reverse osmosis water dispenser.

Another downside is that reverse osmosis filtration systems take up a large amount of space, as the larger units seem to be the most effective. They use electricity and require extensive maintenance. The membranes can become contaminated with algae and bacteria. In order to kill the bacteria and algae, chlorine is used, but it can damage the membrane, and replacement membranes are expensive. Hiring someone to install the system is expensive, as well as the power and water it uses. There is just no advantage to installing a reverse osmosis water system with today’s technological betterments.

It’s really hard to fathom why there are so many different types of systems available on the market today that will provide safe water for human consumption. The only places that should even bother with RO water filters are drinking water treatment and sewage facilities. The sad thing is that many of the facilities that should have reverse osmosis don’t because it is too costly to implement. Most public utilities are funded through city contracts, which sometimes use the least effective and least expensive processes available.

The End of Home RO Water Filtration?

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 2:09 pm

In the natural world, compounds travel from a direction of higher content to one of lower content. This means that if you place a handful of dirt into a gallon of water, it will not simply stay on the bottom; it will gradually contaminate the entire vessel of water. That is exactly the opposite of what the reverse osmosis process does. During RO water filtration, pressurized liquids are forced through a membrane so that minerals and other particles that are heavier than the liquid are removed.

How do reverse osmosis water filter systems work and what does it do to water? It is used to remove large particles of dirt and minerals from water sources. RO can remove sand, minerals and stones as well as salt. For the most part, all groundwater contains some form of contaminants that are unhealthy for humans to ingest. What makes it difficult to grasp is that some of the contaminants cannot be smelled or tasted.

Now that you know what reverse osmosis filters do, let’s look at what these filters do not do. On the flip side, reverse osmosis has a laundry list of what it does not do. It does not remove chemicals or disinfect water. Although RO may be one step in a complete process, it should never be the only step if drinking water is to be made safe for human consumption.

Although some companies sell RO water filtration systems for use in the home, they are very expensive and do not provide a satisfactory amount of contaminant filtering. The only homes that truly need RO water filtration are those whose only water option is sea water. So this does supply some demand for reverse osmosis devices, but for most people, they are truly unnecessary.

What the RO water filter systems do not do is remove chlorine. Generally, chlorine removal is pretty much the biggest reason why most of us need water filtration in the first place. This is because RO filters cannot block anything that is lighter than water. This includes a lot of pesticides and herbicides; they are lighter than water and therefore are left behind by reverse osmosis filtration.

Another problem with reverse osmosis filtration is waster water. In this day and age of water being in short supply, reverse osmosis filtering wastes from three to five gallons of water for every one gallon of water that is cleaned. That is a dismal and inefficient record for sure.

As people have slowly begun to learn the truth, reverse osmosis devices are losing their appeal. Manufacturers still try to take advantage of the need for cleaner water by touting the RO water filtration as the most technologically advanced filtration system, but don’t buy into the hype. There are many other water purifiers on the market today that are better.

Filtered Water For Everyone

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 2:09 pm

You arrive home after a hard day at work tired, hot and thirsty. The first thing you do is get a glass from the cupboard, turn on the tap and fill it up. Seemingly clean water fills your glass and you put it to your lips and gulp the thirst-quenching poison. That’s right, poison. Of course it won’t kill you in a day or a week or even a year, but water that is contaminated and not treated through a filtered water system becomes increasingly toxic to our bodies.

The use of water filtration systems prevents toxic substances such as cysts, bacteria and chlorine from entering the body or reproducing inside the body; thus reducing the risk of becoming ill from contaminants. The microorganisms and other pathogens that cause waterborne infections are kept to a minimum.

Some home filters have solid yet permeable blocks that are made from carbon. The carbon element selectively clears some of the toxic substances like bacteria that are found in drinking water. The carbon block keeps the natural pH of water and does not filter useful minerals that are required in healthy water. Water filters have even been medically certified in reducing the chances of cancers of the colon, bladder and rectum. This is because the byproduct of chlorine that is commonly used to treat water is a known carcinogen.

Among the most common way of filtering water in the home is the pitcher-style water filter. This involves pouring water into the top of the pitcher and waiting while clean, fresh and filtered water enters the container. While this certainly is the most common way of filtering and is a great start, it only filters water you manually pour into it.

Of course it is a personal choice to drink filtered water, but the positive results of consumption of healthy water weigh heavily. Contaminated water can sometimes cause people to seek medical attention for waterborne diseases, such as dysentery and bilharziasis (a parasitic disease related to drinking water contaminated with fluke). Avoiding infection is a much wiser route than seeking treatment for such diseases. As they say, prevention is much better than the cure.

California Senate Bill 375 Requires Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 2:09 pm

Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32, 2006) calls for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in California to 1990 levels by 2020. All we have to do to fix the problem is to determine emissions goals for cars and light-duty trucks and give the automaker their marching orders, right? Well, no. There’s a much better solution.
If we continue to assume that people will keep driving cars, and that the population is expected to increase, the carmakers alone are not going to be able to solve the problem.

What about changing the existing assumptions? What if people didn’t have to drive as far? What if they more of them took public transportation? Could a new approach like this, combined with more traditional efforts, reduce ghg’s even in the face of a population increase?

Enter Senate Bill 375 (SB 375, 2008), which requires a reduction of ghg’s to 1990 levels from new land development or redevelopment projects. Additionally, it calls for a technical advisory committee which will make recommendations to the California Air Resource Board (CARB) detailing how we are to reach the mandated goal.

So where does this committee come from? Who has the knowledge to make such a comprehensive ten-year plan? Twenty-one professionals have volunteered their time and talents to make this happen. For the most part, they fall into two groups: organizations whose goal is to reduce emissions and organizations who want their cities and counties to thrive. While these goals may seem to be at odds, the job of the Regional Targets Advisory Committee (RTAC) is to make a plan to do both at the same time.

Who is representing our community’s varying interests? Ten committee members are involved in local government and city planning, five are involved in public transportation, five are from organizations that support environmental issues, and one from a California new home builder. They hail from all over the state - big cities and rural areas as well as colleges and non-profits.
The RTAC report to the California Air Resources Board is due at the end of September. In the next two months, they will put together recommendations of actions and measurements that will enable each region to meet the required goals, taking into consideration the capabilities of each entity and current and projected economic factors. No small feat.

In the end, their accomplishment will be one that could not have happened without such a multi-discipline long-term commitment. Only an effort like this has the potential to significantly impact the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in California.

Getting Your Recycling Schedule Organised

Posted: January 30, 2010 – 4:24 pm

A further procedure of recycling is mineral recycling, which is an alternative beneficial method in order to preserve natural resources such as gold, lead and aluminium to point out a few. The recycling of materials involves the melting of items in order to acquire the raw mineral deposits that can then be reused in different goods.

A good deal of the e-waste sort of goods tend to be found in junkyards and in peoples properties until eventually they end up in landfills. The recycling of non-biodegradable goods can genuinely aid an awful lot to minimize the quantity of pollution while at the same time also helping to save a assortment of natural resources.

Recycling paper is an art and could be categorised under recycling paper or eco recycling. There are heaps of uses for recycled paper, for example: toilet hire companies use it for bog roll! This class of recycling problems recycling products that are fabricated from paper as this permits them to be utilised for some other items. This kind of recycling often helps to minimise on the amount of plant life and trees that are being chopped down.

It is possible to take on the recycling of different physical objects including textiles, metal, glass, paper, glass and digital goods to name a few products. If you intend to recycle a high volume of items, you might wish to look into container hire as a method of storage for the waste prior to it being handed over to a processing site. There’s a huge number of ways that strong steps against the threat of global heating can be taken on. Some of the methods embrace items such as recycling paper and recycling what is been branded as e-waste to mention a few principles.

The art of recycling is likely to include the processing of the final goods as this indicates that they are ready to use to make something else. Recycling is becoming increasingly embraced and conscientious waste administration is something that is extremely widely thought to be part of daily life by many individuals. The increased number of individuals recycling indicates there is not as much want for skip hire.

Recycling is in reality seen by lots of people as a rapid repair solution that is able to inhibit the somewhat rampant rate at which waste material is accrued, as this waste is harmful to the ecological harmony. The waste that’s gathered for recycling is rated as this is one of the strong methods in which to moderate the amount of waste that is inflicted on the climate.

The skilfulness of e-waste recycling basically concerns the recycling of items that are non-biodegradable. This way of recycling comprises the recycling of items such as mobile telephones, pcs, laptop computers, calculators and additional like goods.

It is more pleasing to apply these variety of ways such as recycling as every time things are recycled it is a element in aiding the natural environment. There are a lot of skip hire firms that are encouraging families to recycle. There are several recycling processes that can be used to make a wide difference to the earth and the ecosystem which all of us rest in. The many techniques help to inhibit the greenhouse gas emissions that are developed.

Looking into skip hire sizes is a good place to begin if you are involved in recycling and doing your bit to support save the world and keep the ecological harmony.

The Best Water Filters Available

Posted: January 30, 2010 – 4:24 pm

For even the savviest of shoppers, buying a water filter in today’s marketplace can be confusing. Hopefully, this article can assist you in making the right choice when purchasing a new filtration system for your home or business. When it comes to water purification, there are quite a few different technologies to choose from, such as loose carbon, distillation, ultraviolet light, reverse osmosis and carbon blocks. Let’s take a look at what are the best water filters available today and how each of them works.

When shopping for the best water filters, choose one that will reduce contaminants to at least one micron; less if possible, as the smaller the number, the better the filtration. Too much filtering though and you will remove the minerals that are good for your bones and teeth. These units will typically combine several types of filters.

If you take a look at loose carbon filters, you will discover that they are actually bacteria factories. They allow oxygen to exist within the filter, which encourages and enhances the growth of bacteria. Although this type of filter is very cheap to purchase, it is expensive in the long run, since the filters must be replaced frequently.

Distillation is effective when filtering bacteria, solids, sediments and organic or chemical contaminants that will not evaporate. There are some chemical contaminants, such as MTBE, that will evaporate, so distillation is not effective in filtering that.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is sometimes used in conjunction with other filters to kill bacteria, and has been found to be a very effective tool. The light affects an organism’s DNA, so it cannot replicate. If it cannot replicate, it is harmless.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a filter which reduces fluoride, radium and numerous other contaminants to a very high degree, although it does have its limitations. There are a large number of contaminants found in water that will easily pass through an RO filter. Reverse osmosis is also used in conjunction with other filters to be very effective, though the process does remove the healthy minerals as well. RO by itself is capable of reducing contaminants such as radium, arsenic, barium lead, nitrates and nitrites, as well as giardia and selenium that are found in tap water.

When choosing the best water filters, performance is the key factor and is actually the most important thing to look for in any water filtration system. Do your research and don’t waste your money on an ineffective water purifying system that simply does not work. Carefully read the packaging to determine which contaminants the filter will reduce, as stated by the manufacturer. The label on the product package should indicate this information based on standards set by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International (a public health and safety company).

Being a professional, Matthew McMillan only recommends the best cure possible to remove genital warts. His methods are highly recommended and information of genital wart remover can be found at TreatmentForGenitalWarts.com.

Biological Friendliness And Nature Friendliness, Both Are Part Of Our Lifestyle

Posted: January 29, 2010 – 4:26 am

The attitude towards environmental friendly products makes you consider about the adjustments of your lifestyle without too greatly investment. The scope of the green friendly products is that it is not altering the natural world both at the productive stage and the consumption stage.

But we have to appreciate the fact that the term “break to the ecosystem” is only relative. We can not ignore the facts that whether the products are green friendly or not, the raw material or the resources are utilized and consumed for the production of green friendly products too. So a clear in mind quantity of break is being made but the fact to understand is to what extent the impairment is done. Organic corn for example, does give damage to the corn but it is only temporary as the corn can be regrown and hence no permanent damage occurs.

To understand the means environmental life attitude changes the life style, consider the bleach and chlorine products and their use. Then understand about their replacement with natural friendly products. These biological friendly products have their vital substances produced out of citrus and other biological substances. Still, they give an excellent outcome and sometimes, even additional than what the chemical and chlorine products give.

This being so, such friendly products are quite safe for the humans as they do not have any chemical irritants which affect the skin so it would be a pleasure to use the natural friendly products. Even though the biological friendly products are safer than the chemical contained products, we can not obtain all that for granted. Such products are biological friendly, no doubt, but they do not give the guarantee that all such products are safe for human beings.

Every so often you will feel uncomfortable or inconvenienced to use such natural friendly products, still you can contribute to the natural world by selectively preferring biological supportive appliances. You have to assemble in no doubt to purchase appliances which have certified energy star. Such certifications are given after due diligence, tests and trials to confirm their capacity to consume lesser power.

This may be expensive primarily but it is going to give a lasting impact and a long term plus. If you can invest still further, think about harnessing of solar energy. This will further reduce your power bill. But it can be fully effective in places with maximum sunlight.

Since the advent of internet, your scope of understanding green movement has increased in several ways. Nowadays there are many specialized stores which are handling biological friendly items.
