Go Green Easily: Got Friends, Buy Bulk

Go Green Easily:  Got Friends, Buy Bulk

Go green easily and buy in bulk with friends at a grocery warehouse.  You save time, money and fuel just for starters.  Most grocery warehouse stores charge $45-50 for a yearly membership and allow up to three people to be on the main member’s non-corporate card.  When split three-ways it comes out to a little over $16.00 per person to join.  The average savings buying in bulk from these kinds of stores is 33 to 38% on fresh vegetables and fruits, up to 43% on fresh meats or poultry or fish and up to 55% on canned goods and staples such as flour, rice, sugar and coffee.  These discounts include the organic foods more of these stores are carrying.  While these stores keep a basic inventory of popular items in stock, they do switch brand names, quantity sizes and rotate seasonal items quickly.  Most send out flyers in the newspapers or put on their website special deals or things being offered for a short time so check those out before you go.

Go green easily buying in bulk with your buddies and keep your friendships enriched.  One of the beauties of bulk purchasing with people you like is how you spend more time together just by doing a necessity.  You get to hang out writing the shopping list, making the purchases and then dividing it all up.  The other nice thing about shopping together is that impulse purchases are kept at bay.  Having a friend there to remind each of you that it’ll be harder to separate out the cost and taxes on that cute bird feeder or the complete Beatles compilation keeps everyone feeling more on task.  The free food samples can be a bit distracting but if you go there hungry, after 15 minutes of wandering the aisles, you’ll be full; we all know how important it is not to shop on an empty stomach.

Go green easily buying as a co-operative with neighbors, family, or even coworkers.  What’s not to like about something that saves you money, strengthens your bonds of friendship and helps the planet?  Your bank accounts stay as full as your cupboards, you can reuse containers from past purchases (good for the earth) as you divvy up the goods, take one car and turn a boring chore into a fun day.  There’s strength and savings in numbers so round up your posse and get your “green” on.

Go Green Easily: Reuse Glass Jars

Posted: May 31, 2009 – 5:59 am

Go Green Easily:  Reuse Glass Jars

Go green easily by reusing glass jars from sauces, olives, jams and even spices.  Instead washing jars out and throwing them in the recycling or, say it isn’t so, the garbage, use them again and again.  It’s so easy to soak the label off, grab masking tape (it peels off easily) and relabel them for left-over soup or anything you can think of, really.  You go to a warehouse grocery store and see a gallon of artichoke hearts but what to do with that large jar after the goodies are gone stumps you.  Put your flour in it to keep bugs out or use it for the jumbo bag of coffee beans you’ve been wanting to put in the freezer.  Glass freezes well as long as you don’t subject it to extreme temperature changes and leave room for the food to expand while it’s freezing.  When freezing liquids always leave 1/2 to 1 inch of room from the top of the jar and keep the lid loose until your food is frozen so the jar won’t break.

Go green easily using glass jars and utilize the bulk foods.  Most stores have bulk cereals, pastas, snack foods and other staples that can be bagged there and put in jars at home.  They also have spices, honey, nut butters and syrups so why not reuse the same type jars for that?  You’re saving resources, counter clutter and you don’t have to guess what’s in the jar; if you use masking tape labels even spices aren’t a mystery.  When the item inside the jar changes, peel off the old tape, put on a new piece  and voila, a used glass jar gets a new life, again.

Go green easily with reused jars and be healthier.  There is a lot of controversy about storing and microwaving food in plastic storage containers.  Too many types of plastic leach unhealthy chemicals and vapors into the hot food when it’s cooking and also as it cools in the container.  Glass doesn’t leach, leak or warp when heated so it has a built-in safety feature.  Using 8-12 ounce jam jars to store left-over soup will give everyone their own cups of soup to heat and serve, so clean up is a breeze.

Going green is easier than you may have thought and you have the start of a new storage container collection already in your cupboard.  Soak off the labels, use tape for new labels, fill them up and reuse them when they empty.  What could be easier?  Money, resources and your healthiness are saved in larger doses for the future.

Green Living

If you want to a more environmentally conservative or green home to help protect the planet, it mightn’t be as hard as you believe. With just a couple of small changes to your daily routines, you can easily make a positive impact on the environment. One of the better areas to start with is your own home. An efficient shower head is a great water-saving device. Unfortunately, old shower head use twice the amount of water than newer efficient ones. Another good idea is to get a dishwasher or washing machine with a four or five star energy rating. This rating means the machine is excellent for minimizing water and power use.

Anyone who wants to become more environmentally and ‘go green’ only needs to follow a few simple steps. The first thing to do is look at improving the efficiency of your household appliances. If you are able to get a more efficient shower head then you should definitely do so. New shower heads use less than half the amount of water as old ones, and this is a great saving. Also it is a good idea to purchase energy efficient whitegoods like dishwashers and washing machines. There is a star rating in most countries that will tell you how energy efficient an appliance is.

Trying to go green and improve your environmental footprint really is not too hard. All you have to do is look around your house and change a few simple everyday appliances. The first thing that needs to be changed in most houses is the shower head. In the old days shower heads wasted a lot of water, but their modern equivalents have the amount lost. This is a great saving and the first thing you should do. Next, you should try to upgrade your washing machine and dishwasher to the most energy efficient models on the market. You can normally judge the efficiency of a model by a star rating on the side of the unit, five stars being the most efficient.

Heading Back to the Stone Age

Posted: May 29, 2009 – 4:00 pm

It looks certain that the future of the human race is grim, as we are heading back to the Stone Age before long. This is predicted fairly soon - in geological terms, at any rate - maybe in around 500 or 1,000 years time.

Why? Just see how fast we find new types of metals and fuels and then burn them out. In the space of little over 200 years we’ve used up most of the resources. The rate we are burning up the planet’s resources is simply unbelievable.

Soon the oil and gas will be gone. Following that, all the coal deposits will be used up. The last to go will be nuclear fuels, but that won’t take long when all else is used up. By that time metals will be scarce, and a chunk of iron or aluminium will be worth more than gold is now.

Probably, by this time, the only power sources will be solar, wind or tidal generators, and maybe a small amount of geothermal power in one or two areas. And with no metals to build or maintain them, their lifetime will be limited to a few short years - perhaps a generation or two. In any case this shouldn’t be too much of a problem since by that time there may not be much left to power. It looks as if the seas will be a barren, poisonous soup of plastic residue and nuclear waste by then anyway.

Looking at the prospects for human life after that point, things look grim. Essentially we will have burnt the planet out and thrown ourselves back to the Stone Age - except that we won’t even be able to survive at that level of ‘civilisation’. That’s because previously there was an abundance of flints, wood and game to hunt. Those have mostly gone now.

We can only try to imagine the grim reality of life at this time - a knife or spade will be worth about twenty or thirty cows by then; food will be whatever you can grub up with your bare hands, or with a piece of expensive wood. The currency will be cows, pigs and slaves. For as we sink back down into a Neanderthal existence once more, from which there can never ever be any escape, all the vile old ways will return. The human race will return to an animal-like existence.

The shortage of food will result in cannibalism, until the population has shrunk back down to the size that can be supported without any technology. Cannibalism will probably be widespread, since without any technology to produce and distribute food, the population will have to shrink down to a fraction of the current numbers, and until that happens hunger will be universal. When that time returns for us, the planet’s population will shrink to about 5% of the current levels. The earth’s human population will be much larger than now when all this occurs, so that around 99 percent will die.

It is also important to note that areas with the highest technology levels will fare worse at this time. Rural areas in backward countries will essentially carry on as they are now - and will never change. High-tech countries will see a return to pre-Stone Age life but without any of the benefits of the land at that time - we have removed all the usable materials. The implication is that life in the western world will return to the same sort of level seen in somewhere like Papua New Guinea now - but without the culture. This isn’t really controversial since no one can suggest any realistic alternative.

And remember - there can never be any escape.

No energy, no transport, no power, no metals, no plastics, no industry -and that of course means no medicine. No antibiotics, no surgeons, no survival if you fall ill.

A Neanderthal lifestyle of an animal quality is the only option then, as timber, game and flints no longer exist. It seems possible though that after life in the West has virtually died out, that in remote areas of places like Brazil might remain and even flourish. When the toxic urban humanity that chainsaws the trees and bulldozes the land has died out, native tribes - if any remain - should have a brighter future.

There’s only one possible escape from this dilemma: if before that point we have developed a space travel method that allows us to mine the planets and asteroids, to keep the supply of metals going for vital industries.

And the only vital industry by that time will be space travel research, because the planet will on a short trip to extinction in the near future. The only way out is off - and the only way off is by finding a way to other planetary systems, where we might be able to locate another similar planet.

If we are lucky, of course. And it doesn’t take a genius to work out that will mainly be for those in power, plus the odd doctor or two.

Do you want to live a green life?

Posted: May 28, 2009 – 6:31 pm

When you buy anything made within a 100 mile radius of your community you’re casting a wide net of green mindedness.  Whether you’re buying from a farmer, carpenter, winery or a coffee shack, using local resources builds the entire community up.  The money you spend stays circulating within your area, keeps small businesses thriving, cuts down on transportation costs to and from the source and  pride in the product will show.  Local merchants have a positive reputation to nurture if they want to survive so customer care is generally quite a bit better.

Go green, go local and stay happy with the quality of products you get.  A local farmers’ market is a treasure trove of unique, personal resources.  Hand-crafted edible and non-food items made by your neighbors are one-of-a-kind gems and they’re easier to get information about.  You can ask the designer or the grower when, where and how it was made.  If you see a craft or skill you share with a vendor, you can ask where they get their supplies and why they chose that place. You can visit many of the farms and studios your favorite items come from to get an even better idea of the growing or making process.

Go green when you get local products by reducing packaging waste and costs.  Bring your own mug for that morning espresso and grab a bag of fresh-roasted beans or a muffin that was made 2 hours ago by the baker.  You kept a paper cup and box out of the landfill and didn’t contribute to the use of extra fuel for shipping the beans or muffin across state.  How easy was THAT?  With all the fresh produce available during the warmer months, why not grab an iced tea, some totes and visit the small farms near you?  More and more of these little farms are letting you go pick your own produce if you want.  No trucking fees, plenty of foods and flowers to pick from and the only packaging used is newspaper to wrap delicate things in your totes.

Go green, get to know your area, crafts people and resources better.  There are still many local businesses that, once you have a good relationship with them, will even barter some their wares for yours.  The more you support your local merchants the more you’ll see come back to your community.

Pros And Cons Of Residential Solar Energy System

Posted: May 24, 2009 – 2:32 am

Harnessing the power of the sun’s ray to create energy to power our place is really appealing.

But the issue is, Is everything about solar energy good? having a look at the present cost of fossil fuel-based electricity, it is sort of unreal to convert into solar energy system. However, with the heightening concern on the state of the earth, there’s actually a requirement to find other ways of energy except for what power plants are using at the moment. Where do you place yourself? Whether you are a supporter of clean energy or just care about where your financials go, taking a look at the pros and cons of home solar energy system will help you decide as to whether to convert or not. Pros Solar energy is free. Do you know the earth soaks up 174 pettawatts of solar radiation? This implies that we’ve got more than enough source of free energy to power each house on the planet. Unfortunately, almost all of our energy is still drawn from oil, gas and coal. But in latest years, there’s a smooth increase of requirement for alternative and renewable energy like solar power. It is predicted that the requirement for alternative sources of energy will rise by 53% between 1999 and 2020.

Solar energy is clean, renewable and sustainable. As the energy made from the sun’s rays does not produce byproducts like those from fossil fuel power plants ( sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, mercury or CO2 ), it doesn’t make a contribution to pollution. Accordingly, the rise in the employment of solar energy and other alternative forms of energy will decrease the clamor for greenhouse gases-producing power plants. The cost of photovoltaic cells is continuously decreasing. The clamor for solar panels has risen by 57% in the U. S. In 2007 and is continuously accelerating on an once a month basis. The demand increase results to the improvement of solar technology in total. The costs of photovoltaic cells have decreased on average of 4% each year during the last 15 years. Solar panels can be installed on most rooftops, dumping the problem of finding an appropriate place for installation. Solar panels need almost no upkeep.

The first photovoltaic cells technology is employed for most satellites orbiting our earth today which are not maintained at all. Many solar panel makers give twenty-five to forty years guaranty on their products. Because most areas of the country receive an important quantity of daylight across the year, solar panels can be installed anywhere. Many states in the country give tax breaks and deductions to homes who desire to install solar energy system.

Check with your state legislature the price of these motivations.

Cons

Whilst the costs of PV cells are in constant decline, the price of installation is significantly high compared to the present electrical cost.

But the good thing is, after your 1st money out, you do not have to pay each month on electrical bills for the remainder of your life. On areas towns and areas with heavy pollution problem, solar energy may not work as fine. Weather can also have an effect on the potency of solar energy. If it is raining, overcast weather or if there’s a hurricane, the solar panels’ potency is reduced. You are only manufacturing energy during day time. These are general pros and cons you may encounter when considering the conversion to solar energy system. It might be best if your call relies on location, cost, budget, discounts, tax allowances and practicality.

Can You Help Prevent Climate Modification? Yes!

Posted: May 24, 2009 – 2:32 am

Climate modification is essentially the excessive heating of the planet, which results in dramatic climatic changes. So, are there ways to prevent climate modification? Yes! When you choose to build a wind generator for your household’s source of clean energy, you are making one of the most significant choices possible to help prevent climate modification. Because of the changing societal conscience about renewable energy, more and more homeowners are looking to do-it-yourself kits to build a wind generator. Wind has been harnessed for for centuries for many uses including as a powerful souce of energy. There is growing consensus amongst scientists and researchers that when moving air is harnessed properly, wind can be a powerful and effective source of renewable energy.

How can wind be converted into energy is a question that is commonly asked when one first decides to build a wind generator? Using a wind turbine is the answer. A wind turbine is really just like a huge fan that can take the kinetic energy available in the wind and convert it into mechanical energy. When this mechanical energy is used by any type of machinery like a pump then such a machine is known as a windmill. But don’t just do this without a kit created by a certified professional. Use the wrong kit and electricity can be very dangerous. Make sure you read reviews if you build a wind generator for your home.

In a lot of ways, the highly volatile issues surrounding energy is helping the climate modification debate. Coal and oil have powered the world’s industrial revolution. Oil is not available in many countries while coal is. The largest concentrations of oil are often found in areas with political turbulence. One needs only look at the situation in Iraq to understand this fact. Now that China is exploding in the world economy, there seems to be a growing consensus that alternatives to oil are needed.

Maybe it’s karma but almost all of the alternatives to oil are favorable ways to slow down the rate of climate modification. All of the alternative sources of power such as hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, and yes, even nuclear energy, produce significantly less pollution than energy derived from fossil fuels. Less pollution is the key for one very simple reason.

The notorious greenhouse gas is a major byproduct of using fossil fuels for energy. Whether using oil to produce electricity or just to gas up the car, the use of this medium produces carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas. A reduction in quantiity of it in the atmosphere will help to mitigate the greenhouse effect. We should see improvements in the atmosphere as our energy production evolves away from oil. Of course, whether we actually get around to this anytime soon is the bigger issue.

Secondly, a highly effective way to help prevent climate modification is to cease deforestation. Large areas of forests like the one found in the Amazon River Basin in South America are being leveled. The result has been disastrous to the progress of climate modification. Nature has a natural way of filtering toxic gases like carbon dioxide from the air. It does this through photosynthesis with plants. Dense, huge forests are the biggest and best filters of carbon dioxide. By cutting them down, we reduce the ability of the planet to filter out the bad gases while we continue to pump more of the gases into the atmosphere. This formula is bound to cause trouble no matter how you measure it.

Can you help to prevent climate modification? Yes. We need to kick our oil habit and stop wiping out our forest areas.

You can make a difference! Start with education and make the choices that will prevent climate modification like choosing to build a wind generator for your source of power.

Taking A Look At EPA And Its Importance

Posted: May 23, 2009 – 6:31 am

landfills

For environmentalists everywhere, December 2nd, 1970 stands out among other important dates. This was when President Richard Nixon signed into law the Environmental Protection Agency, otherwise known as the EPA. It forever changed how each individual would play a part in the United State’s fight on pollution. Without the Environmental Protection Agency, the US would be congested with polluting chemicals, hazardous waste and other garbage that would slowly destroy its natural beauty.

The EPA is not alone in its fight to keep the world a clean place. But it does play an instrumental role in convincing other countries to join in the fight to lower pollution levels and encourage more people to participate in recycling programs in their area. Even the Kyoto Protocol, of which the United States is a part, determines the amount of green house gas emissions that are allowed, thus having an effect on each and every citizen of the world.

Perhaps the greatest contact the American citizen has with the Environmental Protection Agency is the recycling program found in local cities and towns. There are laws governing the illegal dumping of hazardous waste into the environment. They push for corporations and businesses to join a recycling program to benefit the environment and serve as an example, with regard to the serious nature of pollution and overflowing landfills.

The Environmental Protection Agency covers endangered species, as well as air, water, land and hazardous waste pollution. They help to protect the environment in more ways that you could possibly think one agency is capable of doing but they manage to get it done. Without this agency regulating the industry and helping people get into a recycling program, this country would be in an appalling condition.

If you need more information about the Environmental Protection Agency, then you can visit them at www.epa.org. Learn how you can give back to your community through recycling and through trying to keep waste products from contaminating the soil, water and air. It is about doing your part to help save the environment. Without you, there can be no real changes no matter what laws are passed and what statues are handed down by a court of law. It is one small step to recycle and one giant leap for mankind.

Hosting the Eco Way

Posted: May 22, 2009 – 8:02 pm

You might be thinking what the hell in the entire world is green web hosting?  Are they going to place a green label on the page?  Is a green banner going to be available?  No green web hosting is just like any green product is good for the environment. I’m assuming you are trying to figure out what green web hosting has to do with the environment.

Massive amounts of energy is used with these web hosting centers.  Each server requires a certain amount of energy to keep up.  This energy requirement is high because these servers need to stay cool and have no down time.  For them to do this a large amount of energy is needed.  Many web hosting companies have 100’s to 1,000’s of servers in one location.  You can imagine the electrical bills aren’t cheap.
When we start discussing green web hosting we are talking about how they get their energy.  There are a number of green web hosting companies that are starting the trend towards earth friendly energy sources.  When referring to earth friendly energy sources we are discussing sources such as wind and solar.  Each company will there get their own green energy or they will purchase energy from companies that off renewable energy certificates.

When looking into green web hosting you are looking to help out the whole entire environment.  You will not see any difference in speeds or space because of being green.  Going green in your web hosting is up to each individual.  While there will be no improvements because of green web hosting you won’t see any negative issues.  Many times people thing it is more expensive with green hosting.  Using green hosting will not affect the bottom line as their prices are usually around the same as other hosting options?.

Reasons for Placing Caps on Landfills and How it is Done

Posted: May 21, 2009 – 5:31 am

Landfill Problems - A Landfill Site Anatomy

This article applies to all typical RCRA Subtitle C Landfill Cap Systems, and is an educational guide only read the USEPA guides before taking any action.

Landfill caps can be used to:

* Minimize exposure on the surface of the trash landfill.
* Prevent vertical penetration of water into wastes that would produce polluted leachate.
* Confine waste while treatment is being applied.
* Keep in check gas emissions from underlying rubbish.
* Produce a ground surface so as to support plants and/or exist for other purposes.

Landfill Capping is the most common manner of remediation as it is generally less pricey than other technologies and effectively manages the human and green risks allied with a remediation location.

The design of landfill caps is site specific plus depends resting on the wished-for functions of the system. Landfill Caps can range from a one-layer system of vegetated top soil to a complicated multi-deposit system of soils and geosynthetics. In general, a lesser amount of complicated systems are required in waterless climates and more complicated systems are essential in wet weather climates. The material used during the construction of landfill caps involve low-permeability and high-permeability soils and low-permeability geosynthetic products. The low-permeability materials reroute water and avoid its path into the rubbish. The high permeability materials carry water away that percolates into the cap. Further supplies may perhaps be used to enhance slope stability.

The most crucial components of a landfill cap are the barrier layer and the drainage layer. Low-permeability soil (clay) and/or geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) shall comprise the capping layer. A bendable geomembrane liner is positioned resting on the barrier layer. Geomembranes are usually supplied in hefty rolls and are available in numerous thickness (20 to 140 mil), widths (15 to 100 ft), and lengths (180 to 840 ft). The candidate list of polymers commonly used is drawn out, which includes polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylenes of an assortment of densities, reinforced chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE-R), polypropylene, ethylene interpolymer alloy (EIA), and various newcomers. Soils used as barrier materials by and large are clays that are firmed to a hydraulic conductivity no greater than 1 x 10-6 cm/sec. Compacted soil barriers are commonly installed in 6-inch minimum lifts to achieve a thickness of 2 feet or more. A composite barrier uses together soil and a geomembrane, taking benefit of the properties of each. The geomembrane is really impermeable, however, if it develops a leakage, the soil component prevents noteworthy escape into the underlying trash.

For services lying on putrescible wastes, the gathering and control of methane and carbon dioxide, potent greenhouse gases, must be part of facility design and operation.

Asphalt/Concrete Cap

The most effective single-layer caps are composed of concrete or bituminous asphalt. It is used to create a surface barrier connecting landfill and the natural environment. An asphalt concrete cap would cut down leaching through the landfill into an aquifer.

Subtitle C Capping

The RCRA C multilayered landfill cap is a baseline design that is not compulsory for use in RCRA hazardous waste applications. These caps by and large consist of an upper vegetative (topsoil) layer, a drainage layer, and a low permeability layer which consists of a synthetic liner over 2 feet of compacted clay. The compacted clay liners are effective if they hold on to a certain dampness content but are prone to cracking if the clay material is dried. Therefore alternative cap designs are more often than not considered for arid environments.

D Subtitle Cap - RCRA

RCRA Subtitle D requirements are for non-hazardous garbage landfills. The design of a landfill cover for a RCRA Subtitle D facility is generally a function of the foundation liner scheme or native subsoils there. The cover must meet the following specifications:

* the material must exhibit a permeability no greater than 1 x 10-5 cm/s, or equal permeability of any foundation liner or natural subsoils there, whichever is less.
* The layer to keep the waste dry must contain at least 45 cm of subsoil material type.
* The erosion prevention layer has to be not less than 150 mm of subsoil material able to sustain indigenous flora development.

Unorthodox design can be considered, but have got to be be of equivalent performance as the specifications outlined above. Altogether, covers should be designed to prevent the “bathtub” effect. The bathtub result occurs when a more permeable cover is placed over a less permeable bottom liner or natural subsoil. The landfill then fills up reminiscent of a bath.
